EXACTLY!!
What do you do? When one breeds. there first litter, you do your
homework. You ask questions, and hopefully receive the answers. You try to
match up the breeding partner's as well as possible for the particular
attributes you are looking to incorporate.
Anyone can say (usually) after their first litter, that they have never had
this or had that. But if you breed long enough, often enough working with
various bloodlines, sooner or later you will find that you have experienced
various things.
We repeat litters when we get good results, we don't repeat litters with bad
results. Since we have no DNA markers, we don't know if the bad experience
was just a fluke, will the bitch or stud dog ever produce it again?
Kudos' to Syd, having the problems she did in the beginning and being able
to continue in the breed successfully. Many people would have thrown in the
"whelping towel."
On the other hand those who have had no problems(that they know of) may
breed several litters before something crops up. You ask yourself why? Where
did that come from? You don't always get answers.
After 40 years in the breed, I still say what I have always said.....if you
breed often enough, long enough, sooner or later you will find first hand
the various problems that can crop up. it's EDUCATION the hard way!
I also feel you can't blame the stud dog, nor the brood bitch entirely. It
is a matter of how things fall into place. You do your best to eliminate
problems. sometimes it is a matter of numbers, 3 litters, you may not have
seen any problems, by the time you get to 30 litters, if you do, you may
have seen a variety of problems.
I learned after a few litters.....never say never!
