We are talking about the German Shepherd Dog, a breed bred
for working and herding (besides all the other wonderful qualities)!
Groom your dog to perfection, do all you want to make it look beautiful, BUT if
the dog can't move on various types of footing maybe the dog
doesn't belong there! Same as, if a judge can't find a good dog on
anything other than sod, maybe he / she doesn't belong there. Movement
is only a part of this breed, as is Temperament,
Intelligence, and Structure. When they all come together you have a good GSD!
I am for safe footing, but .... do it for the right reasons.

My opinion....I think the National is one place our dogs should be at
their most beautiful, and if sod is what it takes for them to move well,
let's by all means use sod. If there is another equally suitable
surface, let's try it. Let us not cut corners at our most important
