What part of the country do you live? If you are close to Oregon or Washington
the Oregon club is hosting a 3 day herding trial this coming weekend. Friday is
C coarse only, then we have 2 more days offering A B & C. The youngest
shepherd running is a 9 month old male who is a Gucci grandson. My gosh he can
herd!!!!!!! I like to introduce my kids to sheep at an early age. Not herding
just teaching them self control around stock. No reason to act like an idiot. I
like to socialize pups around folks who work their dogs because they seem to
know more about animal behavior in general. They are more forgiving when a
young dog acts stupid.

All this discussion about sheepies just makes me want to run out and buy
myself a flock! NOT! I can see being disowned and thrown out on my butt
when I got home with them (do you think my beau would let me use his new
Toyota Tundra to haul them!!!!)?
I do have a question though - I am thinking I want to try herding with the
GSD - my 8 year old and my 14 month old.. First, when is a good age to
start? Can the 14 month old start as soon as I can find sheepies? Do you
start with Sheep first or ducks or is that two different things? Is the 8
year old too old? She has WONDERFUL common sense about things and I don't
see anything being an issue, but has anyone ever run into a challenge with
an older GSD?
Are there any good articles on how to get started?
I have done breed, obedience and tracking. I know I don't have the stamina
for agility, so this will be the next new experience.
