I start walking my puppies around sheep on leash at 4 months of age. They go
in the arena at 6months usually on a long line. They get used to them this
way and my two would not bite sheep.Â
the greatest book is Herding Dogs Progressive Training by Vergil Holland. On

LMAO... Glad this topic came up...
All this discussion about sheepies just makes me want to run out and buy
yself a flock! NOT! I can see being disowned and thrown out on my butt
hen I got home with them (do you think my beau would let me use his new
oyota Tundra to haul them!!!!)?
I do have a question though - I am thinking I want to try herding with the
SD - my 8 year old and my 14 month old.. First, when is a good age to
tart? Can the 14 month old start as soon as I can find sheepies? Do you
tart with Sheep first or ducks or is that two different things? Is the 8
ear old too old? She has WONDERFUL common sense about things and I don't
ee anything being an issue, but has anyone ever run into a challenge with
n older GSD?
Are there any good articles on how to get started?
I have done breed, obedience and tracking. I know I don't have the stamina
or agility, so this will be the next new experience.
