If you look at your dog, running around freely ,in your back yard, and he stops and stands, the GSD has always taken that stance in the rear ,because it is the most comfortable, and poised to take off again. . Handlers through the years have over -accentuated the stance ,by pulling one leg back too far,and pulling the other foot forward flat on it's hock. This lowers the whole rear end of course and accentuates the slope of the back, which is all completely unacceptable, and not real, but used for picture taking all the time. The GSD never stands square ,like terriers,or both hind legs back, like sporting dogs, because he is at REST, with that one leg farther back that the other. That's why in the "olden days" we walked the GSD up into his natural stance,by baiting him from the front.
