They all seem to return after trying other breeds. It might be good for our
breed, were it not so popular that every owner of a German shepherd thinks to
breed Daisy to Spot and sell the puppies to their friends.
Evan, That is a good point and something we (myself and UCLA)are discussing.
Where to obtain
quality dogs with the intelligence and temperament to deal with the disabilities
as well as the social demands? The first thought was to try pups that washed
out
of Guide dog programs. Another thought was to get dogs from rescues and
shelters.
Then, the question is what breed? My role in this will be to meet with VA
Hospital Administrators, physical therapists and mostly the Vets themselves.
We want to determine what needs the Vets have that can be met with a service
dog.
Then we need to determine which breed meets that criteria. Of course, my choice
would be the GSD. But, since I have placed my Labs as bomb dogs and SAR dogs,
I
have a great deal of respect for that Breed as well.
I am only a volunteer at this time. But, the Director has asked for my input
and
I am hoping to become more involved (read employed)in this program as it
progresses.
They want
me to take Charm with me on all my visits, so that can only be a good thing for
our Breed :-)
It really is amazing what UCLA already has and where they can go with programs.
Maybe I will be asking you all for pups one day.
