My boy that I lost in July had been having seizures for a year and a half. At
first I thought it was environmental. Then I thought it was the heartworm meds
and then we had no clue. They just called it idiopathic epilepsy. I tried to
join that epilepsy group but never could get to it. Our kennel club had a
chiropractor speak once and she did atlas adjustments for seizures with good
results. I was lucky to have a personal chiropractor who is also trained to do
dogs but since he is not licensed cannot charge. He will do them on a Saturday
any time for me as long as he is in town. I could not tell that made any
difference. His litter brother in Florida also had a seizure but his were
controlled with homeopathic remedies. We started Chance on phenobarbitol and
had to increase the doseage. After increasing it to the max without the
desired results, the vet added Keptra (generic version) to his regimen. The
cheapest place to get it is at Costco. He was supposed to have one pill every
8 hours, but I could not live my entire life around giving him meds every 8
hours. I tried every 12 and that worked wonderfully for him. When he would
get over stressed he would have a very mild seizure or two. I had valium on
hand to give him if necessary. He had one the afternoon before I took him to
the vet and even had one right before I took him in to have him put to sleep.
I was spending over $40 a month on his medications, but over the course of all
this he started losing control of his rear end. That got to me more than the
seizures. When he did have a seizure, my Tibetan Spaniels would let me know.
They would get very upset and keep barking until it had passed. The seizures
usually did not last long, but when he first started having them, I did not get
very much rest. I was ever on the alert to hear the Tibbies barking and then
waking up to determine if it was a seizure alert bark or something else. My
biggest regret was that when he had one I could not get down on the floor and
hold him. I was told that was helpful but since I had both knees replaced I
just can't get down on the floor easily. He was also very hungry after he had
one. At one seminar I attended for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels I was able
to speak with a neurological specialist and he said that it is common for them
to be starving after a seizure. Also, the homeopathic remedies that worked
for Chance's brother did not work for him. It was also difficult to go off and
leave him. Once my friend forgot to give him his meds and waited until he was
due again. I told him that it was important that the meds were in his system.
If he forgot give it to him as soon as possible when he remembered. I hated to
leave him and have someone else responsible for him. I had to keep a log of
what time I gave him his pills or I would forget myself. I also kept a log of
when he had the seizures. Once he had to spend the night at the emergency
clinic on IV fluids. That was when he first started having them. It was a long
ordeal and I felt so sorry for him as he did not understand what was going on.
I hope you can find relief for the poor dog. Linda HendrixGoose Creek, SC
