[ SHOWGSD-L ] SLOPING TOPLINES & ANGLES=BAD HIPS & STUPID VETS

Hi List,
I have to write this because I am sooo ANGRY I am literally shaking.
I dont know where to start with this--so I apologize cause this will
probably be long.
I sold a very pretty sable bitch at 4 months old to a friend who agreed to
show her. My friend had her for a year. Justice will now be 2 yrs old in
April.
She has been shown probably about 7 times--won her class almost every
time--nice moving and pretty, plushy little girl. My friend had lots of
problems and
got pregnant and called me about 4 months ago and asked if I would take her
back. Of course I did.
Justice is used to being the only female and being in the house with the kids
and playing and having a family life. She cant do that here. I live
alone--I have other females, including Justice's mother, sister and more family
members-and so now Justice is not THE ONLY female here (like she was at my
friends
home) and since I work (and my friend didnt) and cant leave her loose in the
house all day with my other girls, and of course dont want to leave her in the
crate all day, she now has to go out in the kennel when I am not home. She
comes in at nite and sleeps in a crate. She is not used to being in a
kennel--she hates it. She jumps and leaps and jumps and leaps and barks all
day and I
am really trying to find her another home before she hurts herself in the
kennel--hopefully I can sell her to someone who will show her. I CANNOT keep
her. Have too many other females here.
I have her advertised on the "GSD Showdogs for Sale" list that Teri Kridler
has and in the paper here and last Sat. finally sold her on a co-ownership to
a really nice family who are interested in showing her--they also have a
Czech male who they would like to eventually breed her to--if both dogs OFA.
(Interestingly--this male is 5 yrs old and has NOT been xrayed yet. hmmmm--but
then--he is Czech--so of course he has good hips.) right??? duhhh.
I dont normally EVER sell ANY of my dogs to be bred--unless to someone I know
and approve of their breeding knowledge and practices but I decided to take
the chance because she really needs to be in a home--and not a kennel--and
these people seemed to be fairly knowledgable and I really liked the wife,
Nancy.
Her husband, Rick, seemed like the know it all macho type and I wasnt crazy
about his know it all attitude--but all in all, decided to let them have her.
He of course informed me when they first got here last week all about his
Czechoslovakian male and showed me pic of him and his sire and dam and his
pedigree. Handsome, black and red--square--but not roachy back--nice male. He
also
informed me that he knows "all about these American bred GSD with their
sloping topline and angulation and that most of them have bad hips." He got my
blood pressure up to about 900 and we had a discussion and looked at MANY pic
of
American dogs and their toplines and rears --and their OFA certifications,
including many of the dogs in Justice's pedigree, most of which are show dogs
and nearly ALL of which are OFA certified. (Kismet's Heart Throb, Caralands
Limited Edition, etc etc--and lots of Erynbrook/Achtung breeding along with
mine
going back to Sundance Kid). Nice pedigree--Good stuff.
Justice's mother had an injury to one hip as a pup and will not OFA--she is
NOT dysplastic and has PRODUCED OFA in her other litter. both her parents are
OFA.
Justice's father was a couple months short of 2 yrs old when I bred him--I
have since sold him and they have not xrayed him yet but..... both his parents
are OFA. Other than Justices parents, the 2nd and 3rd generations back are
SOLID OFA, in the 4th & 5th gen back there may be 3 dogs that are not OFA.
We discussed this all and they (mostly Nancy) wanted her and wanted to get
involved in showing her and her teen daughters are interested in Juniors. I
need to get Justice in a home--I thought this would be a good home. I sold
her.
Because of Rick's sceptical attitude about American dogs and hips--I told
them that they could get her xrayed and if she didnt pass--I would take her
back
and refund their money. I have a very good sales contract and I ALWAYS
guarantee hips, along with temperment and health.
I get a call from a very upset Nancy yesterday--their vet xrayed her--she has
very bad hips and they want to bring her back. Nancy was almost in tears on
the phone--she REALLY fell in love with Justice and really wants her--but of
course her husband wants to bring her back. Of course I am devastated. I told
her to make sure she brings the xrays--I WANT TO SEE THEM. I KNOW the stories
I have heard from so many people about STUPID vets telling people their dogs
have bad hips--only to send them in & find out there is nothing wrong and
get OFA's cause the stupid vets cant position the dog right or read them right.
She brought Justice back tonite--I refunded her the money. I took the xrays
out of the envelope--and gasped. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HER HIPS. How
could this vet tell them she has bad hips?? I SHOWED her the nice round head
of the femur--the nice round socket--nice tight fit--nice looking hips--I
showed her xrays I have here of several of my dogs--that are OFA--in fact I
have an
11 yr old male who is OFA--and Justices xray is BETTER than his !!!!!!!! I
compared xrays and showed her there is nothing wrong with these hips. I tried
to explain to her and show her that Justices hips are NOT bad. WHAT IS WRONG
WITH HER VET??? She obviously does not know how to read hip xrays--and of
course Nancy believes her vet and not me--and finally left, almost in tears
cause
she really didnt want to bring her back.
I am so ANGRY. Why are people SO STUPID????? why are some veterinarians so
STUPID????
I am going to call the vet tomorrow and get a copy of the xrays and send them
in to OFA. Then I will send these people a copy of the certificate from
OFA-------And use it for the next time someone comes to buy her. they blew
it--they wont get a second chance.
