I have to agree with Miss Elizabeth on a lot of the points she has made. It is a sad world that we live in when we have to put pad locks on our dog's crates at shows. Years ago, many years ago, Elizabeth's Dad, Butch Stiefferman, was my handler for both my German Shepherds and my Pembroke Welsh Corgis. It was at the shows in Springfield, Mo. that he was showing my Red/white corgi female, Happy, that someone removed her from her crate in his van and turned her loose on the show grounds. Luckily for me someone spotted her running loose and was able to catch her. They knew Butch and took her to him at the Shepherd ring. This was a scary thing way back then but now it is even worse. There are those "CRAZY" people going around dog shows and either taking or turning loose very valuable and loved members of someone's household. How many have to be taken before someone really gets mad and takes the law into their own hands to deal with these people. I sincerely hope and pray this does not happen but If you mess with my dog or kids you WILL have to deal with me. I know that I get a bit paranoid at all breed shows when I go with friends, help them set up and look around at who is set up close to us. I make a mental note of what they look like as well as what breed they have. How many of you have set up and gone to check on where the judge is in their judging schedule and feel that your dogs and equipment are safe. I know I never will feel secure in this again after someone decided that my equipment was a lot nicer than theirs and just picked it up and took off with it. Dog show equipment is NOT CHEAP. Think about this at your next show. On the view of our Junior Handlers. THEY are the FUTURE of not only our breed but of all the other breeds we have today. We have to help and encourage these young people in every way we can.Have you ever given any thought to where our BIG TIME handlers of today came from. They were once Juniors themselves and where would they be today if it had not been for those that took them under their wings and taught them and helped them in their goals of becoming handlers. We have a lot of very promising young people today and I encourage those of you that can to mentor and help these bright, hard working young folks become the Handlers of the future so they can in turn help those that will follow them. I have known Elizabeth since she was little and she has an uncanny ability with any dog she is given to show. Yes, she was born into it you might say because her dad, Butch, and her mom Gail, were both handlers in their own right. She has learned from her dad and he has taught her to properly work with a dog to show it to it's best potential. Her mom Gail has showed and taught her to properly groom whatever dog she is showing. Elizabeth is a very talented and hardworking young lady and will without a doubt in my mind be one of the FUTURE BIG TIME handlers should she make that her goal. She is a credit to the word "JUNIOR HANDLER" and is always willing to help another Junior to present their dog in the best way possible on any given day. It is a Crazy World we live in today and yes, we will continue to go to dog shows and show our beautiful dogs that we have bred and chase that ever illusive title of CHAMPION. We will also take precautions to make sure that our furry friends are safe and if that requires putting pad locks on our crates (making sure that those that need access have a key) and watching not only our own area but that of our doggy neighbors then so be it. Life goes on and so shall we that love our furred friends. We love to see them get out there and do what they do so beautifully a lot of times with our upcoming juniors on the end of the lead.
