If the hosting of the Futurity includes hosting an Amateur Futurity you will
see
fewer and fewer clubs bidding on the shows. Do they really think that the extra
7 to 8 entries will cover the cost ??? No wonder the PC is in deep shit
financially.

I have certainly been verbal enough. I know you are not asking to hear from
me again...and I guess I am
also definitely "OLD Guard" as we started out very similar to you and Bob. We
handled against the
'big guns' also when we started....still would if we could run. But
alas....those days are gone. <G>
I understand if you want to continue with the Amateur Futurities....and you
are
the Chair.
It is your decision.
While it is not a "serious problem" for any of us .....whether we love it or
hate it......What IS a problem is
that you made it MANDATORY for ALL Clubs and members; even if they are
adamantly against having
an Amateur Futurity along with the "regular" Futurity in conjunction with their
Specialty Shows!
Helping newcomers that we haven't even met yet .....or even know if they will
compete at any Futurity.... or
more than one.......while having no consideration for struggling Clubs that are
on the edge of 'folding' is the
real problem.
Since our Specialty Clubs pay dues to the Parent Club....it does seem like they
should be contacted
and allowed an opinion or vote on this. Some will be all for it.....no
problem......but what about those that
are NOT??
If our concern is that "our sport is dying".........consider, HOW will we
even
HAVE this sport if all our local
Clubs fail??? How and who will encourage the newcomers then?? WHEN does
the local Clubs get
some major consideration in these decisions. AND if we lose the "old Guard"
that are now keeping these
clubs and this sport alive.......who will then bring in the newcomers??

I get it.
The Old guard does not like the Amateur.
You don't hear much from newcomers, so you.?
But since everyone is entitled to an opinion, at the urging of those who
have entered the amateur, I will state my opinion and then go back to work.
I have about 12 hours of "stuff" to do today for the Futurity System.
Actually to me, the Amateur is a vehicle to try to attract newcomers into
competition. They may have a
good dog, but Want to show it themselves. Maybe they have heard all the
talk
about politics (God Forbid
)and don't want to get involved.
When we started showing dogs back in the 70's, my husband wanted to show our
own dogs. It took a long
while to get good enough, maybe 5 years. I just wanted to hire a handler
and
win. Loosing sucks with a
good dog. But he persevered. HE personally finished our first champion and
went on to finish about 6 more.
But...he learned he himself was not competitive in the specialty ring. So
there we had to hire handlers.
Bob would LOVE to show in the Amateur today - but as a judge he cannot.
My point being....our sport is dying. People today want to do activities
themselves. See the surge in
performance events. The amateur is an attempt to provide a venue for
newcomers to participate and
god forbid win. But with all the bad mouthing of it..all the complaints of
it being a waste of time...Why would
they want to enter???
IF they win they are looked down on.What ever happened to "Encourage, don't
Discourage"
