ROM's my way. This story really touched me! What a wonderful reminder to all of us not to forget our dogs are more than initials before and after their names! Memories like the ones in this story are priceless! Thank you, Beryl, for sharing! Pat Castle Kennels, Ltd. ROM's my way. There are R O M's and then there are...ROM's Original article by Beryl Eshom Our foundation bitch was born in 1967, purchased from Cappy Pottle and Jean Stevens of Tucker Hill Kennels. She was a GV CH. Yoncalla's Mike ROM daughter, Tucker Hill's Gretina. Our "Tina" had an exceptional temperament and a wonderful personality, she was always so much fun to live with and to show. She completed her Championship and a CD. During her show career, she often drew a crowd with her antics. Once on a circuit with Bob Penny, she became bored while waiting for her turn to be examined and judged she picked up an abandoned cup at ring side tossing it in the air, hoping someone would play her game. She dud catch the attention of the judge, Helen Polintza. It was not for the points, just a good laugh and a placing. Once she completed her Championship, we (my husband, Russ and I) were interested in having a GSDCA dual award titleholder. Tina thought she all ready knew that dumb stuff, heeling, and the recall, all of the exercises in Novice B. They were done perfectly at home or at training class. She did manage a CD, but not in 3 trials, for her it took 4. At Sir Frances Drake KC, under Bob Sisemore she was working on the recall, had done the sit and stay part, after the come command as she was about half way to me when she spotted a butterfly. Such a lovely distraction and so much fun to chase in the hopes of catching it. She suddenly stopped, gave me that "oh oh, I've been caught look" and proceeded to come to me by rolling on her back until she reached me, then went to heel position. Mr. Sisemore, smiled as he marked a non-qualifying, score. Most of ringside was in hysterics. As people were walking by they were exclaiming, "Look at the German Shepherd". She drew a large audience, and plenty of chuckles. Tina was not only a clown she seemed to be Mother Nature. She was wonderful with her litters, kittens, baby chicks, rabbits, anything and everything we seemed to accumulate. One cold December morning our daughter, Laura went out to the barn to care for her rabbits before she went to school. In a short time she came running back in, upset because a doe had kicked her newborn bunnies out of the nesting box. Some were all ready dead, a few survived. We brought the survivors into the house, got them warmed and put them in a small lined box. Laura had missed the school bus, so that meant Mom had to drive her to school. We decided to put the box with the bunnies inside a laundry basket, and leave it in her bedroom. When I returned, I went to check on the bunnies, I found Tina on the bedroom floor, the basket had been tipped. She was lying there cuddling and caring for the bunnies. She was very protective of them. She was going through a false pregnancy at the time, and actually had milk. She tried to nurture and nurse these strange looking newborn "pups." She acted like a new mother, she wouldn't leave them and didn't want our interference. When my husband Russ returned home that evening, Laura ushered him into her room to show off Tina's new possessions. He looked at them and with a twinkle in his eye said, "I'm not crazy about the color, but they sure have rear angulation." We did all we could, hoping the bunnies would survive, eventually over the course of several days they all died. It wasn't for lack of trying on our part or Tina's. She was devastated she wanted her bunny pups . Tina previously had experienced false pregnancies on a regular basis She would often steal stuffed animals and hide them, these were her pups. She had given us three litters; the final litter was a litter of one. The reason for her frequent false pregnancies was cystic ovaries. We had her spayed. Even though Tina had not been very productive, we decided that based on her bunny litter she had achieved her ROM status, Rabbit Of Merit. ROM is a GSDCA achievement based on the producing ability. Achieving a Register of Merit (ROM) is a valued asset to any breeder, and only a small percentage of breeding animals meet all the requirements Eventually two of her granddaughter's did achieve the GSDCA ROM. They were Arelee's Diamond Jubilee and Arelee's Joie' de Vie I always regretted that I didn't take photos of her bunny litter. I did take a photo of her with a baby chick on her back. Memories are so wonderful, all these years later, and after so many generations, CH. Tucker Hill's Gretina C.D., OFA has slipped from most of my pedigree charts. But I will always think of her as our first ROM, not many can achieve a Rabbit Of Merit. Now that is a good Mom!
