I agree with you Linda. It was my understanding that Bart is going to verify
that every effort is made to count EVERY ballot that is signed. Those
ballots that have the names crossed off or obliterated can be held up to a
light or identified by other means. People want to know that their vote was
counted.
The election company would not put in writing that they would make these
extra efforts, but they did SAY they would. These extra steps are not
usually required of the company. If 800 people vote we will have results
from 800 people. If 1200 people vote and 400 ballots are unidentifiable
because of poor instructions we have a problem.
Would it have been better to think for a few hours...perhaps black out the
bar codes and address but not the name? Should we have officially told
people to mail their ballots in a larger envelope? Would it have been better
if unauthorized persons had not addressed the issue with the entire
membership? Could people have printed their name under their signature?
I think the board is trying to guarantee every member that their marked up
ballots will be counted. Then the elected can stand and be called valid.
