Good question, Joan. And, since no one is answering that question, what
amount did the GSDCA give when you were on the board - do you happen to
remember as that would give us a ballpark idea of what should be budgeted?

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] NAIA Conference
I attended the NAIA conference in Colorado this past weekend. There
was SOOO much to absorb, but there were a few presenters' comments
that really stuck out in front of all of them. (I will be making a
report on it and asking to have it put on the PC website....LOTS to
learn about)
There were speakers from a rodeo organization, from Barnum and Bailey,
Canines For Independence, Exotic animal trainers, and SO many more.
While I was the only GSDCA representative there, it was telling that
many of the speakers owned a GSD :-)
Anyway, the stand-out facts:
The United States has to import HUNDREDS of dogs from Europe because
the demand can't be met from U.S. Breeders. (I'm remembering
thousands, but want to check my notes so as to not exaggerate) The
Transportation Safety Act, Homeland Security, War Dogs, Bomb Sniffers,
Law Enforcement, SAR for the Military, etc., etc., are importing
literally HUNDREDS of dogs. The preponderance of the breeds are
Labradors, but other breeds as well. More on the TSA closed breeding
facility in that upcoming report. Fascinating. But the fact is that
many more are being IMPORTED because they aren't being supplied by
U.S. breeders.
The other stand-out.
While it is commendable that AC shelters are transporting dogs from
overburdened shelters, 2 problems arise. 1) the areas from where the
dogs are transported are not 'fixing" the problem in their locale, and
have not compelled to do so. 2) the "empty" shelters to where the dog
are being transported are doing so to stay in business, to make money
selling the transported dogs. This compounds the reasons for both
areas to continue the practice.
The AC shelters and the PetSmart drives are to sell dogs that have
been given up or stray, or brought in from other countries. It DOES
not help the "over-population in the U.S." myth.
Lots more coming! Next year the NAIA conference will be in PA. The
year after that, in So.CA. This is a 'must-attend" conference if you
possibly can.
