I rarely post and this will give away my age. I bought my first German  
Shepherd from Art and Helen Hess many years ago. (1967)
We lived in Dayton Ohio and we wanted a Shepherd, I actually went to Dog  
World Magazine for local Shepherd breeders.
Made appointments with John Neff, Art & Helen Hess and the  Plaga's
I came equipped with 4 small children and Goldbecker and Hearts Book. "This  
is your German Shepherd" 
We picked a male shepherd 4 months of age from Art & Helen because he  looked 
like the picture of the puppy German Shepherd in the book.
 
Hessians Kobol (Fritz) was his name and he was out of Hessians Torchy and  
sired by Ch. Hessians Exactor. He was a double Balder, double Vogue  grandson.
 
I really think they liked the kids, they invited us to dog shows and  got me 
hooked on shows, introduced me to their friends among them was  (Bill & Ginny 
Collins) and thus Art became my mentor and taught  me all I know about 
structure (shoulder lay on under drive, feet placement and  movement.) The 
total dog, 
the total package. Type, beauty and elegance.
 
What type and forehands they had. If your new to the breed please go find a  
book about shepherds and I'm sure you can find a picture of Sel.Balder and GV  
Vogue. I know they could still win today--or maybe the years have clouded my  
memories.
 
Fritz produced Sel.Ch. Elegance of Windyrush and many other fine animals  
with beauty and brains. 
 
We moved to Atlanta but always kept in touch. As Helen said it was great to  
see them at the
Columbus National. Art the little " icon" and Helen as beautiful as  ever. 
(Ms. Chicago) a few years ago.
 
They made an important impact on the breed in those years when competition  
was really tough. They for the most part showed their own dogs, Helen was a  
gifted handler. 
 
Goodby my friend and Mentor, and now that you know the story we can always  
blame Art for my being in the breed.   Peg
