Limited registration means you can not show in breed.
The animal can be bred, but any puppies from that animal can not be
registered. However, the breeder of that animal can change the limited to
unlimited at any time.
You may have been talking about an unregistered animal who needs an ILP # ?
to be shown in obed, agility, etc.etc.
On the dog's registration it does state 'Limited', the border is a different
color.

I think the AKC should make the "limited Registration" something where the
owner can participate and receive titles in Obedience, Rally, Agility, etc.
In other words a dog with this type of registration (identified with a
unique set of letters in the number - say LREG) would be able to compete in
all AKC events except BREED.
That should give these owners a real incentive to register with the AKC. I
belong to a local Obedience club and see many owners working very well with
their dogs and then told "sorry you can't show or compete". That is
heartbreaking for some of them.
This approach could easily take off with some very simple and limited
advertising by the AKC.
