I believe
in the philosophy of live and let live - let those who are interested
in showing in conformation and breeding pursue their goals - let those
interested in showing in performance activities pursue their goals - let
those who want to compete in multiple venues pursue their goals.

As breeders, is anyone concerned about a split in type developing between the
performance GSD and the conformation GSD? The GSD already has so many splits-
All breed vs. specialty, the white GSD vs everybody else, American vs
International. Working dogs need good conformation to stand up to the rigors
of what they are asked to do. It is the same good conformation and soundness
that is required of the show dog. It is heartbreaking to invest a lot of time
energy and $ training a dog for performance to have it break down and need to
be retired. I saw one of Susan Sullivan's dogs a couple of years ago, I think
he was 10 or 11 years old then. The dog was still physically capable of
working sheep and still possessed the desire and drive to do so. While my 7
year old dog was no longer physically able (bad elbows) to work stock and was
retired. Susan's dog has excellent conformation and his bloodlines have
longevity. I think conformation people and performance people need t
o work
together. There are several breeds where the working lines barely resemble
the show lines and I would not want that to happen to the GSD.
