I agree with Beth about control being the key element. I have never done
Schutzhund work, but
I have done personal protection work with my dogs. Back when I was doing
that work, we were
training along side police K-9s and doing pretty much the same training as
they were. And yes
we were using hidden sleaves, doing muzzled attacks and many other things
that Schutzhund
dogs do not do.
However, I could and did stop my dogs on a dime at any time. I could also
take them anywhere
without fear of them being inappropriately aggressive. An example: I took
my girl to the very
first GSDCA temperament test at the Phoenix National. When Bob Penny (as
the wierd stranger)
appeared, she locked her eyes on him but continued to sit quietly at my
side. Her eyes never
left him. When he got to the end and became agressive, she was still
sitting quietly by my side,
just watching him. She did not feel he was close enough for him to be an
actual threat. Jim
Norris (who was leading everyone through the test) told me to say something
to her. I did,
she exploded in furious barking. When Bob turned to leave, I told her to
quit and she did
immediately. Needless to say, she passed the test and earned one of the
very first TCs.

Like in everything else, there are good trainers and bad trainers. It is
up to the person who
wishes to do Schutzhund or prrvate protection to make sure the trainer they
are working with
is a good one.
