As someone who grew up going to Westminster every year, I guess the
"thrill is gone." When I was a little girl I thought it was so
exciting...as an exhibitor, it was a PITA... back when there were
classes, we went WD and WB with littermates one year (in Corgis, not in
Shepherds). There used to be picnics on the benches, and we'd all get
dressed up really fine and go to dinner, plus the days were just so much
fun.
Then it started getting too crowded...you don't dare leave your dogs
unless somebody stays behind to watch them, because of all the ARistas
who come in and annoy everyone.
After not exhibiting for about 12 years, I forgot how hard it was
and entered a Fox Terrier........we nearly missed the judging because we
just couldn't get to the ring (and I had to carry him). No more
exhibiting there for me! The best time to be there is on Sunday
afternoon, down in the benching area, before all the "public" gets in.
I have snapshots from a long time ago, when Jimmy was showing
Georgio for Sam and Marion...I took them to the MidAtlantic Futurity a
couple of years ago and showed them around. In the photos are Ed
Barritt, Joe Bihari, Karin Wagner, Connie Beckhardt, MaryEllen Kish, and
a whole bunch of us, all hanging around the benches and having
fun.........but nowadays I avoid the Garden like the plague. I had to
go a few years ago for my magazine, and it was all I could do to get
though breed judging. I beat it out of there and was never so relieved
in my life to get out of the building!
yes, if you're in dogs, at any level, I guess it's something to
experience...but it isn't the same as it was and I prefer my memories of
the good old days there to the regimented, hot, dirty, overcrowded
fiasco it has become.
