Barbara, thank you for writing these beautiful words to honor this man who none
of us knew...

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] I never even knew you

Because this subject came across the list yesterday, I couldn't shake it
from my thoughts. I sat down at my computer and my fingers began to
type. I had a lump in my throat as I wrote it. What's important in life?
What's really needed and what's discarded? So this was written for a man
I never even knew but who touched me to my core. Barbara

I NEVER EVEN KNEW YOU
By
Barbara J. Galasso

You know I read about you in the newspaper today. I think it was on page
5. Then I read about you on Yahoo news as well. It was even on several
e-mail lists that I belong to. I read how somebody lost their life
today. “Man trampled to death by frenzied shoppers on Black Friday.”
You’re a celebrity of sorts, I suppose. I think I read somewhere that
you were only 34 years old. Someone’s son, someone’s husband, someone’s
brother? Did you get up and kiss your wife goodbye, check in on your
child who lay sleeping and pat your dog on the head before you went out
the door that morning? I don’t know because I never even knew you.

What made you get up that early to work in that store anyway? Was it the
burden of a suffocating economic meltdown? There were bills to pay,
mouths to feed and perhaps the kid needed a new coat to go to school.

You know this just didn’t happen to you. It could be me. It could be my
brother or my neighbor. It goes on anywhere, anyplace here or across
this country. Its called man’s greed, man’s need for more, man’s need
for “me first, me first.” Its called man’s desperate need to survive in
a wounded world made ugly by his own doing. They knocked you down; they
stepped on you and didn’t look back in their quest to buy something to
put a smile on their face or family members. With their head held up
high, their chest puffed out,” Look at the wide screen television I got
for you”, they’ll brag. “Oh you shouldn’t have” they’ll hear. And
they’ll reply, “It didn’t cost me too much, forgetting it cost that
guard his life just so their kid could see the next “American Idol”
final. But heck, like me, they never even knew you.

Yup, I turn the page and read that another major store is having an
early Christmas sale. Come early. Stay late. At these prices, they won’t
last long. Step aside. Watch out. Let me at em’. Hey stop pushing. Stop
shoving. Another guard will stand at the door where you did only a few
days before while customers press their noses against the window pane.
And when asked “What about that poor man who lost his life? Someone
replies, “I waited all night for this sale.” What did it matter to them?
After all, they never even knew you.
