Hi Guys,

I know a lot of you are critter lovers, so I'd thought I'd share my
Hummingbird rescue experience.
.
Yesterday evening, a tiny Ruby-Throated Hummingbird flew inside our
screened-in porch and couldn't get back out. I was able to catch the
little fellow after he flew into a beam and was stunned. I took him
outside and laid him on the deck rail. He appeared to be dead.
Wasn't breathing, eyes closed.

I stroked his back and he finally drew one shuddering breath. This
went on for a while. Stroke, breathe. Stroke, breathe. Then I
remembered that Hummingbirds require an enormous amount of energy and
must eat all the time just to be able to fly. I figured this little
guy's energy stores had to be totally depleted by his desperate
efforts to escape the porch, so I filled a syringe with Hummingbird
"nectar" and commenced feeding the bird.

First I placed a drop on the end of his beak. No reaction. Then I
tapped his beak a couple times and his tiny tongue shot out. (I never
saw a Hummingbird's tongue before. It looked like a tiny white
thread.) I stroked his throat and he swallowed. After the bird
swallowed about 10 more drops, his breath rate increased dramatically.

Once the tiny guy appeared to be swallowing better, I stuck his beak
into the end of the syringe and he really began sucking up the juice.
After about 15 minutes of feeding the bird this way, his breathing
became very rapid and he opened his eyes! I fed him for another 15
minutes or so. He actually started raising his beak for me to stick
it into the syringe. Finally, after ruffling his feathers a bit, the
little "Hummer" suddenly buzzed off into the sunset! This really made
my day!

To make this dog related, a couple years ago, my GSD Jessie brought me
a "gift." She came up to me and laid a live Hummingbird in my hands.
Jessie was always rescuing birds from the "Jaws of Death" AKA
"Scooter" the cat, but how she caught this tiny thing and carried it
without causing injury, is a mystery to me. But then again, Jessie
had a pet Toad that she toted around for about 3 years until my
husband accidentally ran over it with his SUV.
