I do the ROM section in the Red Book, I get the ROM data from Doris, Cappy
and Gloria and I'm the person who then determines whether a sire or dam
qualifies as "living" - and no, we don't require affidavits from vets or
anything - we take peoples' word. Keep in mind - the Red Book is a year
behind - this year's Red Book is the 2009 edition, not 2010. So a sire or
dam that was alive on January 1 of 2009 qualified for this year's Red Book -
even if he or she has passed between then and publication.
I use previous editions of the Red Book to help determine date of death,
look through Reviews for memorials, I've put emails on the List to ask for
help, and I contact owners directly in many cases to ask the tough question
- is your top producer still with us, or if not when did he/she pass.
