Hitler had a GSD bitch - which really put the kiss of death on the breed as
far as the British were concerned. In France, they were (and are) usually
called Berger Allemandes which translates to Shepherd of Germany. Having
lived in that border area - Karlsruhe/Strasbourg - I do know that only
British visitors called them Alsatians.

I've read that a number of times. I do suppose The Alsatian part is true.
I traveled a bit BD (before dogs).
I noticed when I traveled to Italy, France and Great Britain, they were
called Alsatians. In Germany and Austria they called them GSDs. Not sure
about the "wolf dog" part....
If you read Peter Mayles' books about Provence, he refers to them as greasy
Alsations.
