Several years ago I tried to produce a German Shepherd dog that had a
"genotype" of two sable genes for coat color. Well the only way you can do this
is to breed two sable dogs and then take the "sable" pups and breed anyone of
them to a dog that is NOT sable. This is exactly what I did. I bred my sable
bitch to one of Janice Staley's sable males...because of some time and travel
issues the bitch was sent to the east coast and she whelped a litter of five or
six ( don't remember the exact number)...I then sent two of the sables to
Utah...I co-own them both....a year or so ago we bred the sable bitch to a
black and tan...we got seven sable pups....I was certain that "Baby" the dam
had a double sable gene..i.e. homozygous for sable coat color....but to be sure
we bred her again to another black and tan male ( note both sires are AKC
champions and very nice dogs)...and this past Dec. 2 "Baby" once again had
seven sable puppies!......so I am convinced that every puppy
that Baby ever has, regardless of what color the sire is, she will always
without exception have sable pups!....how cool is that...unless of course if
you don't like sables...as for Baby's sable brother....we are having a little
trouble breeding him...he needs some dogie Viagra....boy do I love being out of
school!!!!!!!!!.....FB
