[ SHOWGSD-L ] Genetic Markers in the Breeding Pool

Who would decide which animals to cull and for what problems?
If we find genetic markers for cancer, DM, all types of bloat/torsion,
epilepsy, hypothyroidism, dysplasia, etc., and we remove all these animals
AND their siblings from the breeding pool, I wonder what will be left.

I remember when breeders culled all whites in their litters. Funny, but, we
still have whites available, being successfully bred, shown, and trained.

I once asked Barbara if she had known that Man O'War carried a genetic
marker for bloat if she would have neutered him. She said that yes, she
would have. All I could think of was what a loss that would have been to
the GSD of today! I had a Man O'War granddaughter years ago. I would not
give up that memory nor experience nor love for all the tea in China!!

Be careful what you wish for.

Paula, 280 days and counting

WE NOW HAVE CERTAIN AND INVOLVED TEST PROCEDURES THAT CAN ELIMINATE
CERTAIN DOGS OR BITHCXES FROM CARRYING ,DOMINATLY PARTICULAR HEALTH

BUT... WHAT ABOUT THEIR LITTER MATES?? THE BEST PUP IN THE LITTER IS NO
BETTER THAN THE WORST PUP IN THE LITTER.' THAT IS A PERFECT
TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UNTIL EACH AND EVERYTONE ACCEPTS THAT BEAUTIFUL TRUTH...WE WILL CONTINUE TO
BEAT OUR HEADS AGAINEST A ROCK WALL!!!!!!

SO, UNTIL WE GET THE DNA MARKERS WHICH WILL EXCUSE AND FOREVER ELIMINATE
CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS FROM HAVING THE GENES TO PRODUCE AND FURTHER FOSTER
SUCH
TERRIBLE DISEASES, WE MUST SIMPLY RELY UPON THE INTEGRITY OF THE BREEDERS
THEMSELVES..

Barbara, if your beautiful stud dog was a partner in a breeding that
produced a problem, would you own up to it? Would you blame the bitch? Would
you
eliminate him from the breeding pool? Were all his littermates tested? Have
they
produced problems? Do you know? Respectfully, Syd
