I'm afraid your right Tish. 
I'm one of the "old timers" who started in Obedience and am proud of it.
I always tried to put Obedience degrees on my champions. I plan on doing it 
with "Hunter" the dog
I am currently campaigning. 
Years ago I belonged to a now gone GSDC of So. California. There was a group of 
us with some spectacular
obedience trained dogs led by inimitable Fern Quirnbach who use to take us to 
Children's hospitals and 
retirement homes and put on shows.  It has been a long time since I was so 
proud of our fabulous Shepherds.
Finding champions today with obedience titles is a rarity. And to those who 
have obedience titles truly understand the greatness of the German Shepherd. I 
was one who disagreed when the parent club convinced AKC to move us to the 
Herding group from the working group.

But again I have always been a voice in the wilderness. We need another 
Margaret Pooley as our mentor.

  I printed out the article but haven't read it yet so probably shouldn't  
  comment.  But for the sake of discussion --- Carmen has been very concerned  
about 
  the drop in AKC litter registrations and GSD registrations (all dogs  
  really).  The limited registration which AKC put into effect in the early  
90s is 
  responsible for some portion at least of the drop in registrations.   It's 
not 
  that limiting the gene pool is bad.  It's the drop in litter and  
registration 
  numbers that's a big concern.  
   
  I've been keeping my charts on AKC/futurity registrations for over 15 years  
  now and believe me, we do have a problem.  Unfortunately, it is a complex  
  problem with no simple answer.  We've had a lot of changes in society in  the 
  last decade or so which make it more difficult for people to breed litters -  
  especially large breed litters.  It's an expensive hobby and it's a  time 
  consuming hobby which is hard to pursue these days with both adults working  
and 
  there are children.
   
  Many of us "old timers" got started in obedience, got interested  in the 
  breed, and got hooked on breeding and conformation.  I have a  feeling that 
is not 
  happening as much anymore.  Those who go into the  performance activities 
  spend time with their dogs there and don't get into the  breeding aspect.
   
  Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth for today.  I'll try and read the  
  article later.
