[ SHOWGSD-L ] Garbage in garbage out

2013 is either going to put our club back in financial shape, or bury us.
It is a big commitment, and made at a time when we thought the rodeo would
go on forever. At one time the GSDCA brought in one million dollars each
year, and spent one million dollars. We had $800,000 in reserves.
Then hit the recession, the reduction in breeding, the reduction in
litters, and the increase in costs. The club continued to spend as if the
income
was going to continue, and each year we lost money. The board was doing the
best they could, but as told to me by the head of Budget and Finance, they
spent no matter what the budget was.
Then I heard we were taking on the World Trials, going to make a big
celebration of our 100th year, and we would be sponsored to pay for it. Outside
companies would contribute and the World Trials would bring in a lot of
money.
That is what this board inherited.
They finally realized that the rodeo was over years ago, the income was
down, attendance was down, costs were up and we had to find a way to survive.
The single biggest expense every year is the National. It used to be the
biggest money maker, and was either second or first to the Futurity/Maturity
in bringing income to the GSDCA. Now both are not making the money they
used to, and we could not just continue to spend $14,000 or so each year to
lease the grounds for our National.
We don't know what 2013 is going to do to the club. I have heard both
sides, from fantastic to gloom and doom. But, the end result is, we could not
go on the same as we were.
I too dislike the way the West Coast has always supported the National, and
for years now, has been refused a national. But, I understand. We can not
afford a small show, and that is always going to be expected with a
California national. If the national continues to lose money, we should just
not
hold it.
So, here we are. The board is sort of like Obama. They took over at a
time when the roller coaster was headed downhill. They have to find a way to
stop the slide, and find a way to reverse the trend.
Will it work? I have no idea.
What I do know is we need to look at what got us here, what we need to do
to get us out of the trend, and elect those who will work hard to change
it. As Flower Boy said, if we just elect the same people, we should expect
the same results.

World Trial. The 3 year run in Missouri takes place after those shows. I
does make you wonder what upper management thinks is going to happen with the
finances after those shows.
