Hi Tony;
We placed an extremely large male with Guide Dogs for the Blind many years
ago....and he
was a perfect guide dog for an extremely tall man. They were pleased to have
the big dog
in that case.
Recently we placed a similar very VERY large Service Dog with kind of a tall
woman with
neurological problems that needs him to lean on when she has problems
periodically with
suddenly walking backwards and to pull her up as she sits or falls. ( his
size is a help to her )
In less than six months to make the adjustments and train, he has been in
E.R. with her ten times,
in her Hospital rooms ( she also has seizures and he alerts everyone just
before ) and he has
been in First Class on the planes, he has been in all the elevators and posh
Hotels and Hospitals
as they traveled from Chico, Ca. to New York...and he goes into theaters and
restaurants with her.
He did He has been trained to back under any table or chair out of everyone's
way while remaining
right right next to her at all times. HE LOVES HIS NEW LIFE and his NEW JOB.
She just called me two days ago to say how perfect he is ......except when he
crawls on their
bed with she and her husband. He does take up a bit too much space
there...<G>
This dog is full brother to our young male called COWBOY....is a G.V. ARMY OF
ONE son out of
a BOOKER daughter.......so you KNOW he is one very big dog. <G>
While I completely understand your point....AND I LOVE GOLDENS.. ( who could
NOT ) .....<G>
I think there could be a place for our Breed in the program if they really were
utitlizing it as it can
be.........but evidently not necessarily what they are getting in their own
breeding program?
She just lost her Golden Service dog and wanted to "try" a GSD......she will
never go back!
If I were blind....I would want the extra capability of thinking for itself....
and protection of a GSD.

Hi Ruth:
Your right, the GSD fancy think that the Guide Dog schools have abandoned
the GSD. They haven't, they just learned over years of service that the
Retriever lines with their medium size and soft and loving temperament are well
suited to be Guides. Our fancy forgets that especially our males over the
years are "big" dogs. A large dog is difficult to be used as a Guide. Eg;
getting on a bus looking for a seat and then lying down in front of his charge
is a daunting task for most of our shepherds.
As you know I own Hunter a delightful and very bright typical Shepherd with a
great temperament. But at almost 90 lbs it would a quite a task for a blind
person to take him on a bus, look for a seat. And then scoot him in front of
you. Unfortunately, size is very important to Guide Dog schools.
Our GSD dogs are more than capable of being blind guides but size has been a
big factor in their declining use .

I agree - the retrievers do a very good job for them, they train quickly,
generally are much easier for the handlers to deal with, and very public
friendly and easy care. Those are all important factors.
Now it is not my dog of choice,but I have met very many labs I thought
were very good dogs.
I understand the group's choice as the one that works best for them. I do
believe that they are offering a valid point of view - it is not the full view
- but the view out of their window. It should not be considered an attack, but
an honest statement of what works for htem.

My second ex-wife is blind as a result of a brain aneurysm about 6 years
ago, she almost died....she wanted a German Shepherd guide dog very much but
the school at the time did not have any, I believe they were phasing them out
then....she has a black Lab named Woodson, she's had him for about three years
now.....when the question came out about what breed would you have if not a
Shepherd...I'd have a Lab....Woodson is the most incredible know I have ever
known...he watches over my ex like a hawk!...she loves that dog much better
