Some years ago one of my bitches was trained by Erich Renner and placed as a
guide dog with a beautiful young woman. My bitch was also very beautiful
and I have a picture of the woman and dog. Made me proud. Also I donated a
bitch to Guide Dogs For The Blind in San Rafael and they just loved her. She
went through all the training, passed everything with flying colors and then
they notified me they wished to keep her for their breeding program. I
never heard what she produced though.
Also I sold a young male to a man who had had several guide dogs and was
retiring his old Lab. He came to my house, met the dog, who by the way was
a real nice show dog and had won a few ribbons at specialties under well
known judges.
Anyway this man bought the young dog, had him trained by someone in
Washington state. After he was totally trained I went to visit the
gentleman taking my grand daughter Amy with me. We went out to lunch with
him, walking along the street watching how well the dog worked. The man
said he was the best dog he had ever had.
Now I know I sound like I am really bragging but my point in all this is
German Shepherd Dogs can do this!! I'll bet many of us have some super good
dogs that could be donated to guide dog schools to be trained and to bring
back the great reputation they do so deserve.
