Thanks to all who wrote me off list (& on) about the terms "silky" and "soft" in our standard, as designated faults. Got it! I think my not understanding stemmed from having not seen these faults personally, which led me to think I might have just *missed* them and was therefore not properly *recognizing* when they are there. (I still have never even personally encountered a non double coated long hair GSD, for example.) I guess it's a good thing for any listed fault to not be as prevalent! LOL. Now if only I saw less of other very visible faults I commonly see here -- overstretched/overly narrow & long "snipey" muzzle or slinking type back end motion. I think some of the purely visual type faults really still detract from the extraordinary beauty of our breed, even if (thank God) they don't affect health/function.
