Again, form follows function.  A correct coat requires little or no care.
Example :
In my yard grows a type of weed whose seeds adhere to my slacks or shirt and
must be picked off one by one,  a real chore.  Yet my dogs can walk through
them and their correct coats shed them immediately.  Our standard requires that
the dogs have coats as care-free as possible.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] GSD Standard: Coat Texture/Type

Could anyone knowledgeable about this please explain
1)what exactly is meant by "silky" or "soft" as faults in the ring vs.
harsh/rough + close lying . . . and when (if this differs in practice) this
is penalized in the show ring, and

2)is there experience out there with different coat colors or patterns,
i.e. sable (or whatever) vs black/tan (or whatever), different types being
responsible for varying coat textures/types . . . not speaking of long
coated vs short vs plush, etc.

3)Also, what about diet (or shampoo/conditioner)? If diet contributes to
coats being shinier, having a softer or silkier (for lack of better terms
not specifically condemned by the standard!), slippery "nice" feel and
appearance . . . and this is usually considered to be desirable,
notwithstanding our standard, then how does this pertain to the standard?
Or does it not?

Is this not then a fault? Why or why not? Does the standard mean something
different entirely from what I'm understanding these words  "soft" and/or
"silky" to mean, as they do in standard English outside this context? And,
if not, why would -- under the ordinary meaning of these words -- these
things be bad & faults?

Finally, (4) what about the difference in coat type between dogs that have
tightly packed down dense coats vs "fluffier" (still thick and double
coat)? How is this to be judged in relation to the standard?

Thanks!

Cindy
