  GREAT NEWS!!!

Pasado's Safe Haven (www.pasadosafehaven.org) is pleased to announce that
a Grand Jury has indicted St. Bernard Sheriff's Officers in the street
shootings of dogs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

As you may know, Pasado's Safe Haven discovered 33 dogs and cats massacred
in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in St. Bernard schools and provided
investigators, the cost of necropsies (animal autopsies) on all 33 animals
(costing $7700) and shot DV videotape of the dead animals as part of an
Louisiana State Attorney General investigation in the school shootings.

According to Mimi Hunley, Asst. State AttorneyGeneral, Louisiana:

" The Grand Jury in St. Bernard Parish on Wednesday indicted former Deputy
Mike Minton and presently employed Deputy Chip England for aggravated
cruelty to animals related to the street shootings after Katrina. This is a
felony and was the most serious of all the crimes they could have indicted
them for. AAG Julie Cullen and I handled the presentation. We are still
working on the school shootings.

  Mimi Hunley
Assistant Attorney General Criminal Division "

THANK YOU to Mimi Hunley and everyone at the Louisiana State Attorney
General's Office and to ALL OF YOU who wrote and called and kept these cases
alive!!!

Pasado's Safe Haven has been investigating the school shootings for over a
year and helped underwrite a civil lawsuit on behalf of the owners of the 33
pets. Please read below for background.

  Investigation Background:
In the aftermath of Katrina, Pasado's Safe Haven (PSH), a national animal
welfare group located in Washington State, was rescuing 1200 animals in New
Orleans (based in Houma) when our lead cruelty investigator (Mark Steinway)
received a call: St. Bernard Sheriff's Officers (according to evacuees)
allegedly shot and killed 33 dogs (and cats) - all pets - as hurricane
victims were loaded on to boats for evacuation. They were shot in the body
cavity, arms, neck, and hindquarters (not in the head) causing extreme
prolonged suffering. These victims left their animals in the care of St.
Bernard Parish Sheriff's Officers at three schools in St. Bernard Parish
(where a temporary evacuation site was established). As they were evacuated,
they believed their beloved pets would be taken care of. Instead, they were
massacred.

Mark Steinway, Pasado's Humane Investigator (above), videotaped and
recovered all the bodies for the Louisiana State Attorney General's
Investigation.
Below: Pet owners scrawled signs on the walls, to make sure their animals
could be sent to them. Some said "please do not shoot her", as though they
knew.

  LOUISIANA STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL INVESTIGATES

After the massacre is reported PSH:
-- calls the Louisiana State Attorney General to inform them of the crime

-- initiates the investigation collecting all 33 bodies (in the presence
of Attorney General Deputy Prosecutor's as witnesses)

-- transports all evidence to the Louisiana State Veterinary Medical
Hospital's Diagnostics Lab and pays for $7700 for animal necropsies to prove
that the animals suffered horribly

  $25,000 REWARD OFFERED

-- PSH offers a national reward of $25,000 seeking information leading to
the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of those responsible for this
heinous crime.

-- Tips lead investigators to look into allegations that St. Bernard
sheriff's officers were responsible for the crime.

-- Sgt. Mike Minton , St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Department, is
videotaped by a Dallas Morning News photographer, shooting dogs at random in
St. Bernard Parish

-- Texas newspapers report that local (Texas) sheriff's officers are
asked, by a St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Captain, to "bring shells - as so
many have been used shooting dogs"

-- PSH files a FOIA to gain photo line-up of St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's
Officers for evacuees to identify; Sheriff Jack Stephens (named in the
lawsuit to be filed on Monday) refuses to hand over photo line-up due to
"personnel privacy" issues

--To our knowledge, the Louisiana's AG's Office has yet to acquire a photo
line-up, either. The AG's Office case is still considered "open"

CIVIL SUIT FILED ON MONDAY, 9-11
The people who entrusted their pets to sheriff's officers lost everything
in the wake of Katrina. They believed they could have, at least, saved their
animals. But that was not to be. The owners of these pets, like John Bozes
and his "Angel Girl" (below), are outraged and want answers.

Eileen Comiskey, a New Orleans attorney, is now taking on the case, suing
the Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Stephens himself, and individual sheriff's
officers. PSH is funding as much of the costs for the plaintiff's as we can.
We're a "small" group (compared to enormous, national animal welfare groups)
and wish we could do more. Eileen Comiskey, the attorney, is donating most
of her time. We want to see justice for the plaintiff's, the pet owners. We
hope The Times is interested in looking into this matter.

  ELEMENTS:

a.. Interviews with pet owners who remain outraged
b.. DV video and photos of the recovery of the bodies at the St. Bernard
schools
  c.. Copies of the necropsies
d.. Please call me at 206-300-7217 if you have any questions.
