I have been reading this thread, trying to understand what is being said by
some of us. I liked what Fred said about it being sad if you think so little
of acquaintances that they will be so harmful or distrustful. I have also
tried to figure why I didn't understand it.
Then I realized, I work in reverse from what is being said. Everyone I know,
I consider a friend. Seldom, but sometimes one of my friends does something
more than one time that I find offensive, and those people become
acquaintances. I still treat them as I would a friend, but perhaps avoid
spending a
great deal of time with them. Those would be people I consider an
acquaintance.
It is very hard to move me away from thinking of someone as a friend, and
seldom happens with me. For some reason I seem to consider everyone a friend.
I remember years ago when I was so sick, I got a call from Doug Crane asking
how I was. I mentioned it to someone who asked if Doug was a friend of mine?
I thought about it and said I always felt that way. I would only see Doug
now and then, and often only one time a year. But, after 30 years of that, I
did consider him a friend. Maybe that is why it is so hard when I hear one
of us has died, or is ill. I think of everyone as a friend.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
