In your research/practice as a vet: Two questions:
Will tacking help to reduce (not prevent) odds?
Tacking definitely helps reduce the odds. 20% of Great Danes get GDV-that is 1
in only 5 dogs, so we (vets) usually recommend tacking every Great Dane.
Especially tack your dog if you have to have the spleen removed from
Hemangiosarcoma or some other splenic tumors because it increases the risk of
GDV.
Do you think products such as Gas X are worth giving to dogs, especially those
who eat fast or are more prone to gas?
Good to have Gas x on hand and also a large needle (18 gauge is best). This is
in case your dog bloats-give them gas x and if that doesn't help take the
needle and stab into the stomach at the most hollow sounding part on the left
side. This will alleviate pressure and buy you time to get the dog to the vet
and may save its life. Leave the needle in place if you get it in and are able
to deflate the stomach the vet will remove it once they get the stomach tube in
place.

There is an estimated 75-80% survival rate with bloat without any complications.
Increased risk factors for a dog to develop GDV are:
-1 meal per day feeding
-a first degree relative with a history of GDV (this would be a genetic
predisposition)
-large thoracic depth:width ratio greater than 1.5 (this means large, deep
chested dogs)
-underweight dogs
-risk increases with increasing age
-following splenectomy of any reason (there is extra space for the stomach to
torsion and enlarge)
-eating from raised feeding dishes
-stress (grooming, dog shows, hospitalization, boarding, etc.)
-behaviors or conditions that promote aerophagia (swallowing air) including
rapid eating, exercising after eating)
-fearful temperament
Despite some of the best tacking techniques out there, if you ask any vet that
has worked in emergency, even tacked dogs bloat and torsion.
The above list is from research presented by one of the board certified surgeon
and PhD at Tufts.
