     I have the greatest job in the world. I teach, influence, and serve as a 
role model for 31 nine and ten year old kids 5 days a week for 6 hours a day. 
Yesterday was the last day of school until October 12th, so I invited Santa 
Clara Police Officer Fitzgerald and his retired police dog Aris to talk to my 
students. Aris is a 9 year old Bi-color German Shepherd Dog who is retired only 
because of his partner's promotion to sergeant. The incredible stories Sergeant 
Fitzgerald told about this incredible and brave dog, who once almost lost his 
life after being stabbed nine times saving his partner had a few of my girls in 
tears. My respect and love for this incredible breed began when I was about 9 
when my dad took me to the San Francisco Cow Palace all-breed show. The San 
Francisco Police Department put on a show- demonstration showing the many 
talents of police trained dogs ( all were German Shepherd Dogs)...some 20 years 
later I began training
 protection dogs...I never forgot what I saw those S.F. Police Dogs do. Most of 
the dogs "WE" breed in conformation today do not possess the genetic 
temperament traits to do this type of work, and there is nothing wrong with 
that....but my concern is that we never forget that our breed is a 
working-herding dog and with our desire to produce that next champion, GV, or 
popular stud dog we keep that in mind...I am so excited that when I return to 
school I will be able to bring this year's National into my classroom on 
Wednesday...then Thursday it's off to Ohio..Ed Hill
