[ SHOWGSD-L ] Don't show me the money

But I will disagree about the kids being paid....most are not there to get the
financial reward. They are there to get recognition, acceptance and learn.
Key word acceptance.

This is so true. When Summer won the Breed at an all-breed, she got a fist full
of silver dollars, which she offered to me, but I gave to her mother. Then when
she won the group, she got a bunch of money again, the same result.

The kids are in it for what we started to be in it for, the fun. It should
still be that way.

It is for me.

I knew I could count on you!

I know first hand....I trained many juniors over the years. Just a week ago a
young lady I worked with for a year sent me an email and picture....she took a
5 point major on a beautiful boxer she showed for the first time. She was
truly over the moon. Getting a fee to handle that dog was the last thing in
her mind...she felt wonderful that dog got the recognition and she, still a
junior, was on the end of the lead. That's what its about.

I love to share these moments with the kids, could not be prouder for their
accomplishments.

Every club should open up to a junior program ......they need mentors, they
need support.

Takes time and commitment

I have seen so many times a young handler comes to a show with a decent dog and
goes directly to the end of the line because they are not known. Discouraging
at best. If the judge would only take an extra 20 seconds to give a few words
of encouragement, hey, part of the problem might get solved.

If the other exhibitors and breeders ringside would stop and give them a few
words of support its worth so much more than money in the pocket.

Sort of hard to encourage youth handlers especially if they are doing
AKC junior handling because of the very offensive AKC rule that prevents them
from being paid! Which is just outrageous! Just another way youngsters are
exploited at worst, and disrespected at best! Got into a big
friendly debate with Ken Tank on this subject years ago, yeah Molly if speaking
out against stupidly makes me a rebel, then I'm guilty as charged! Ed

We have lost the youth and this is difficult to turn around
What has helped in European countries is a show strictly devoted to youth
handlers showing your dog or my dog as it does not matter but these shows have
the same credentials as a normal show and points are given etc
I have mentioned this concept to Frank and it would be easy to implement
Perhaps a regional club (local) would be brave enough to try this as a sort of
"beta site" to see the interest but???
We definitely need a transfusion of youth!!!

Where have all the good dogs gone? Long time passing. Gone to pet homes

My heart is broken when I see the entry of the local specialties. TWENTY
total.
That is not acceptable! Not acceptable for the hosting club, not acceptable
for the judges traveling, not acceptable for the ringside....not acceptable
for us elderly traveling to watch the show. I will no longer drive 4 hours
to watch a show that has an entry of 20 with perhaps 16 attending. I miss
my dog shows! I also find it physically difficult flying many hours to
judge 15 dogs. I am sad down to my very toes. I so love my German
Shepherds, there are no better, no more beautiful, no smarter, no more
wonderful dogs....WHAT IS WRONG WITH US !!!!!
