That is so great of you and your students.
Steve and I found out our sons are leaving in the same deployment...now,
really, is it a small world? Plus we have some really great Marine families on
this list (as well as Army, Navy, USAF, Coast Guard) that have written me:

To make this dog related, my son's little Rat Terrier, since the day he left
for Boot Camp last August, has slept every single night in the chair he always
waited in for my son to come home at night. My husband and I have tried to get
him to sleep with us, and he will come in but not for more than 10 or 15
minutes and then it's back to the chair, and oh the joy when his boy comes home
on leave. He doesn't mope around during the day, but he waits every
night...Semper Fido.

Steve, the high school where I teach and act as SADD Advisor (Kings Park High
School) has one of (if not THE) largest Support-the-Troops programs in the
country, which we started when we found out that Julie Degen's husband was over
there at the start of the war. Over the years, we have sent hundreds of
packages and thousands of letters to soldiers overseas, and were honored with a
visit by Julie and Col EJ Degen. We've also received numerous recognitions by
various politicians. When your son goes overseas and you get his mailing
address, if you want to email it to me, I will personally make sure that he
receives packages and letters from my students.
Congratulations on raising such a fine young man.
