The way that it was explained to me is that the percentages have to do with
affected dogs. So, what it means is that if you have a GSD confirmed with DM,
there is only 40% chance that it has the DM gene. Which also means that 60% of
DM dogs do NOT have the DM gene. Additionally, dogs that do have the gene may
not ever be affected by DM.
So, you test your dog and he is positive for having the gene. He may or may
not get DM. You test your dog and he is negative for the gene, he may or may
not get DM.
Not very reliable or useful in my opinion....
