Your $300 is mostly for anesthesia, it is expensive to knock a dog out. If you
use that route, get his teeth cleaned, and do everything you can think of, cut
his nails while he is easy to handle, I did.
Without anesthesia, there is the risk of the dog moving and giving bad
pictures. Also with anesthesia, you will have a shed to beat all, so if keep
coat is really important, you want to go without, and hope you don't have to
retake too much.
Either way, you need good clean pictures. Most of the people I know wait
until there is a break in the shows and they can afford the coat loss.

Here in Rockland, NY the Vet. Prices are worst then a DR.
