Carolyn, You're absolutely right! Normal GSDs don't attack the young. Last
year, I took my 7 yr old GSD bitch, "Jessie," to a large veterinary
college, where she's being treated for severe epilepsy. As I stood at the
payment window writing out a check, I heard a kid squeal and then lots of
laughter. When I turned around, I almost fainted! There was a 3 yr old
toddler with her arms wrapped around Jessie's neck, trying to climb aboard.
You see, Jessie had never been touched by a child in her entire life. Yet
my sweet girl, who had just been through a stressful neurological exam,
stood stock-still and allowed this baby to do whatever she pleased. As the
kid's mom pulled her away, Jessie kissed the baby on the nose. This is a
dog who was not only ill and stressed, but in pain as well. (Jessie has
disc problems, front and rear.) This is what a good GSD is all about.
That's why we love them.

Yes, this subject is just about worn out, but I have not read the one
point that truly reflects one of the
important components of the temperament of our breed ------its instinctual
discrimination. Kathy, Ileana,
Carolyn, and others implied it and were right on in their responses, but
perhaps it needs to be spelled out.
This was a three-year-old. Socialization required ? Training ? Alpha
stuff ? Let's face it, if you put
a three month old puppy with a grown dog and that dog attacked the puppy,
you would recognize a
problem. Normal GSDs do not attack a baby anything, no matter how rough the
baby is. The dog may
mouth the baby to control its action, hold it down with a paw, or get up and
move away. There is a scent
that emanates from a baby animal that is hormonal or something, indicating
the helplessness of that baby.
A normal GSD would never attack a baby no matter the provocation. I was
"raised" by a German shepherd
and did inexplicable deeds as a baby which he bore with quiet dignity and
deep love. I would not have
attempted to raise any one of my three without the help of a German
shepherd, nor were their friends
at any age and unattended ever in any danger, more often protected.
Nope, we devise temperament tests for our dogs but make excuses for
behavior so foreign to our
breed. Go figure.
