Well...............since you ASKED.........<G> We were new to the Breed when the vote went through the GSDCA, Inc. to make whites a disqualifying fault in the Breed Standard. Right up to the vote, the white DQ was a hard fought battle on both sides with deep rifts in the differing opinions....but went to the membership and it passed along with the other DQ's. I remember as 'newbies' we were aware of how serious the battle was. it was even discussed in Dog World at that time. ( there was a new "Blue" champion called Hoobin's Blue Boy in Dog World ) Why go through that again to try to REVERSE a MEMBERSHIP vote?? At this place in time, Clubs and Club members are struggling....we are losing members and Clubs, we are fighting Breed/ Dog / bad law Legislation and are more concerned about genetics and health issues than a color as we try to improve our Breed. To go through this kind of battle and split again would not do the Club nor the Breed any real good. What would be the point? The DQ has certainly done the Breed no harm. We just never see a German Shepherd Dog any more with white legs and some white clear up to the shoulders ....other than the "developing" "rare" "Panda" Shepherd which is just another scam in my opinion. They ARE "rare" only because we don't really breed whites and black and tans anymore. There had to be a reason to make whites a DQ and I have a hunch it had more to do with what breeders were doing than the dogs themselves....i.e. Panda's....etc. As we know changing a Standard is never a simple thing and AKC does not make it easy nor want Clubs to keep changing their approved Standard, and that was no exception when it was done then. I doubt they would look favorably upon another change and battle to try to REVERSE a vote!!! I think it is best to leave it as is. I personally never want to see our German Shepherd Dog broken into "varieties" just because of a color or size or coats......nor do I think we should follow the S.V. in this action with long coats. It's THE German Shepherd Dog........not a "variety" of a Breed. I think we have a great Breed and it is well served by the Standard we have as long as WE pay attention! This has never been a "color" breed other than strong rich colors being preferred........and let's not break it up into 'varieties' now or go back and try to make a DQ acceptable. Why 'go backwards'.......It won't be good for the Breed and it certainly won't be good for the Parent Club. Give me time to try to run for cover..................<G> Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.Marhaven.com Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Breeds Most breeds that exist today were developed for a purpose...be that as a water retriever, all-purpose hunting companion, guardian (of home and/or flock), herding assistant, perimeter keeper, all around farm dog, vermin killer (sometimes with specific vermin in mind), or just as little companions to attract the fleas away from the humans, or to keep us warm...acting as living hot water bottles. Some may have been the result of an accident, or a "sport," but when that happened, people tried to get them to breed so that they'd be recognizable as what they were supposed to be...a new breed. Most of the designer breeds of today were bred just for the hell of it...with the possible exception of some of the "doodles," which were supposed to be non-shedding. They aren't...not even in the majority. Also, they don't resemble one another very much within those so called "breeds," and heaven knows, Labradoodles have been around a long enough time to have more similarity than they do. Years ago I knew someone who was trying to make a new breed out of crossing Irish Setters with Golden Retrievers....she went out of my radar and to this day I have never heard that idea from anyone else. F1 generations may be dissimilar...but after 20 years or so, some progress should have been made. When a new breed is developed, some guidelines (a standard) have to be drawn up...and over time, some changes may be made. Still, turning a DQ into a new breed sounds pretty stupid to me, too. Someone may call it a "rare" auality, but it isn't...it's just something that isn't allowed. Many of us would prefer that the minimum IQ required of dog show exhibitors be at least 130 ... but that ain't gonna happen, either. If a bunch of dogs with the same DQ find favor with people who want to make those dogs into a new breed, what do you REALLY think about it? I wrote a couple of weeks ago that then we should make coated GSDs into a new breed, too. Not long ago, right here on this list, there was a bit of hell raised about some guy on the left coast who was advertising his oversize Shepherds as a new, special breed....as I recall, nobody thought much of that and wanted to drum the fellow off the planet. Same with those panda dogs. But white is now going to be OK? Ridiculous. Peggy ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2009.
