the REAL problem. Volume breeders and puppy mills. There are volume GSD
breeders right here in CA. There are even puppy mills. These folks will
continue to be exempt due to their kennel licenses. They will still
crank out pups and contribut
e to the overpopulation, while the hobby/show breeder dies. How on earth will
a Breed Warden prevent this situation? Â
It goes back to policing ourselves if we want improvement in our breed. If
Judges continue to put up spooks, lifting/paddling fronts, no shoulder and
wobbly rears, nothing will change. When Judges start putting up correct dpgs,
regardless of the owner or handler, and the correct dog becomes more popular
than the dog of the day/month/year, then maybe we can improve our breed they
way it should be. Â
Lead suit on so go ahead and flame me. But don't deny there is a problem in
our breed.

While the idea of a breed warden has some merits, I don't believe it will

egistries that will certify purebred German Shepherds people will skirt around
t. One way to limit it to some degree would be for the Parent Club to have a
losed registry, in that our breed is only registered by the Parent Club. Only
embers would be able to breed and sell purebred German Shepherds. Even then
ou would have people breeding unregistered purebred dogs and selling them
ithout papers. Remember when they tried to outlaw alcohol during prohibition??
s long as you have a registry like AKC you will have the commercial breeders
elling large numbers of puppies. As long as you have pet stores selling
urebred puppies and people spending their money on puppies you will have those
eople that want to get their "investment" back by breeding and selling puppies.

eir pets from stores tell me these are quality dogs because they spent
800-1200 on them, so they were "breeding" quality. We all can tell stories
bout people that have called looking to breed their bitch or even offering
heir stud dog for service because of the wonderful qualities their dog
ossesses, that amazing temperament that they want to carry on for
enerations... they haven't checked their hips or elbows because they have
apers guaranteeing they are good! I have heard so many reasons as to why they
hould breed their dogs, to which I try to educate them as to why they
houldn't. We all have. I agree with Peggy's post about preaching to the choir,
'm sorry but I don't believe that the majority of dogs in rescue and pounds are
he result of the serious breeder/exhibitor. I have been showing/breeding since
990 and I had a neighbor that produced more GSD puppies than I probably ever
ill. He sold them all without papers, the dogs were two animals he bought as p
ets so
ewhere. How do you stop that? He isn't going to do any rescueing, its the
esponsible breeders/lovers of the breed that step up. Until you can control
he registering of purebred dogs, not running it as a money making corporation
ut a conscientious control of the breed you will not be able to reduce the
mount of indescriminate breeding.
