Actually, while on the surface it might seem to be a good thing for there to
be scads of candidates, in reality a lot of people running for office at the
same time tends to create bizarre and undemocratic results. We have all
heard of elections where the normal concentration of votes was split by
unusual candidacies from 'third parties' and 'fourth parties', and therefore
the win went to the candidate who was in fact the minority choice.
Democracy and majority rule don't work as intended when there are excessive
numbers of candidates, because votes become fragmented.
Additionally, it is unlikely that all voters could possibly be equally
familiar with all candidates, therefore it is inconceivable to expect that
all members will be in a position to choose "the best of the best". Sadly,
that is the sort of scenario where votes get split up so many ways that the
winners are often in actuality those who would never win in a smaller race,
thus the outcome is the opposite of a democratic expression of the will of
the majority.
I believe I heard that a scenario such as that was how Fred Lanting was
elected to judge our National once upon a time.

I have faith that the members will vote for those they feel will do the

job, and believe that with so many people running, we will have great
opportunity to choose the best of the best. A larger slate just means more
choices and makes it even more important to vote.
Our board has always worked hard for the members, and given up a great deal
of time and personal freedom to serve. I know the new board whoever is
elected
will do the same.
There is no personal advantage to being on the board, therefore those who
run should be admired, not criticized. I see the glass as more than half
full.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
