Carolyn,
I have noticed that dogs who are either too long.. too short and especially out
of good condition and health are particularly prone..... also learned you can
never say never when it comes to torsion in your dogs... And it never gets
easier to accept... I would LOVE to think it was hereditary 100% and we could
eventually find a genetic marker for it.? Unfortunately, I think it is a
combination of genetics, condition, conformation, prepared food... and even think
that bacteria and virus plays a part....

Gerard Van Es (Haus Antverpa) is a KNPV (Dutch Police Dog Sport) and Schutzhund
trainer and breeder of both German Shepherds and Malinois in Belgium. He?once
told me that when he married his wife she was a Malinois breeder.? He said, at
that time, it was unheard of for a Mal to bloat.... But when he began to breed
them he wanted HIS Mal's to look more like GSD's.... he didn't like the little
shallow chests and spindly legs... so he started breeding them to look more
like GSD's deeper and more substancial... he said as a result it isn't all that
uncommon now for Mal's to bloat/torsion.? That is why HE believes that bloat is
only hereditary in the fact that deep chested dogs bloat sometimes.

He asked if I planned to breed dogs without deep chests... because if I did I
could eventually breed GSD's that never bloat... of course, he said... you'll
be the only one that wants them... LOL

I've often thought of this......

?

?

Is our Breed the ONLY Breed that is faulted for too much 'tuck up'......?

?

I wonder why.......and I wonder if it hasn't given cause for a weaker and

longer mesenteric ligament...... ( or whatever it's called?)? <G>

Particularly on a dog that is long through the loin.

?

I have another thought to add to this too... and that is strong abdominal
muscles... dogs that are well toned and healthy from a good diet and plenty of
exercise.... dogs that are kept parasite free and healthy... who are groomed
daily?(in my case?a rake run throught them on the table just before the
walk).... dogs who live this way seldom bloat.....at least that is my
experience....
I?have been guilty at times of having too many dogs to give them all the
attention that EVERYONE deserves... not just needs but deserves.... It is
especially difficult if you have too many dogs AND puppies... because puppies
require A TON of time is you give them a proper introduction to the world....

?But if we don't take time to keep our dogs in tip top condition then we can't
just blame deep chests for bloat.... we have a herding breed that does not do
well kenneled all the time... they need our time....and I know I am in better
shape if I walk my dog 30 minutes a day or so and throw a ball a few times...
besides that it gives me some busy afternoons and keeps me out of trouble and
from telling dirty jokes
