Good question. I have been blessed with many GSDs who had a good combination
(from my perspective) of both friendly disposition and protective instinct.
Personally, this is exactly what I want. A few of these dogs have been great
with people but very aggressive around oher dogs. They easily passed the TT,
but that is because they did not have to greet anoher dog as part of the test.
I do a lot of early training and socialization, puppy K, etc. Is dog
aggressiveness inherited? Do others consider it undesirable in GSD
temperament? Was there ever any consideration of making it part of the TT?

Having received the latest issue of the Review and looking at the cover
of the magazine got me thinking about the GSD's temperament. He really
is capable of doing just about anything that is asked of him. How many
of our dogs would be able to go into the hospitals and be comfortable
going from one person to another and having them pet and play with
them? If it's true that the breed is suppose to be aloof, and not lend
itself to friendship easily, I wonder how these marvelous dogs that do
this type of work fit into that description of the ideal temperament.
Some of my best temperament dogs in years past were wonderful and
approachable with people. My BOM winner, Chieftain's Nuance was one of
my all time favorite dogs. She was great with anyone who came in the
house. You'd pat her on the head and that's all the attention she'd
want from you. She wasn't even overly affectionate with me even though
she was my shadow. Nothing bothered her.....but would I have thought
she'd make a great therapy dog? No! Why?........
.because she was all
my dog. She loved being with me all the time and couldn't care less
about anyone else although she was accepting of other people. I think
the therapy dogs have a friendlier disposition. My dog Amber that I
have now, is a real people dog.......loves everyone, but what a great
watch dog she is! She'd have a ball going into the hospital because she
truly enjoys people "loving on her!" How about the German dogs who are
suppose to have a strong assured personality? Would these dogs be good
therapy dogs? My feeling is that not all GD's would be suited for this
kind of work. If that is true, are there different degrees of the ideal
