Yes there are different degrees, and sometimes they are embodied in a single
dog. We need to have gentler dogs for the important work of therapy, guide,
hearing, and family companion for most...we need to have the over the top
tough dogs, for police, personal protection, estate protection, etc.
There are many degrees of "right" in temperament. We have a Nitro son
here, who is out of our German girl "Kessie"
he is one TOUGH son of a gun, I mean TOUGH...he is my personal protection
dog when I am running in the
desolate areas I frequent...he is not dog aggressive, and won't generally
even look at a dog, unless I ask him to.
HOWEVER you can bet that he will let any person know by his flagged tail,
hair, and low growl that they are not
even close to being welcomed near me. Unless of course I tell him quietly,
"leave it". He will hit the end of a lead with teeth flashing if some
weirdo gets too close, and just can't seem to get they are to keep their
distance.
He will "AUS!" an inch from you, and remain barking.
On the flip side, he is a comedian (Like Nitro) and is FANTASTIC with the
kids...Also when he has his vest on, and is accompanying Kaitlyn in her
wheelchair to a store, or to a school,
he is 100% a GENTLEMAN, and quiet and obedient.
He may have one of the greatest brains we have seen (and we have been
blessed with some very smart dogs) in about 30 years. Ken believes he IS
the smartest GSD he has seen since he was a teenager.
So yes different degrees of temperament, you bet...sometimes you are blessed
to have it in a single dog.
