The problems can be compound....
1. An infection that needs to be cleared, but the glands do not need to be
removed. If this will work it is probably the best solution. Antibiotics.
2. Recurring impaction and infection that will not stay clear - removal of
anal glands. We have an old time vet who fills them with silicone before
surgery so that he can see where the extent of the gland is, making sure to
remove all of the gland. If you don't, says the vet, they will grow back and
try to excrete but find no opening after the surgery - not a good thing.
3. Perianal fistulas - a separate, but often related problem. If there is a
tear in the anal tissue, not at the gland opening, it can be an auto immune
problem of perianal fistulas. This is the usual cause of blood in the stool in
these dogs, but the badly inflamed gland can bleed also. Make sure the vet
checks very carefully to see what it actually is.
Perianal fistulas used to be fatal eventually but not so any more.
Cyclosporine is the newest drug of choice taken orally. It used to be quite
expensive as it was used in the treatment of AIDS. But newer drugs has reduced
its use in humans and so it is now cheaper for dogs and works wonders.
That's about all I know - about anything!
