Boy it lived to 16 years!!! and you bred it. I take my hat off to you.
I feel that today most of our Shepherds live to about 10, and every year
after that is a blessing. . I do believe the larger the breed the shorter
the life span, I was told by a Wolfhound breeder that 7 years is the norm
for thaeir breed and our border terriers live to be 13 to about 15, our old
girl(border terrier ) is now pushing 16 years of age. but she lives a very
good little life and is spolid rotten.

My wife Linda took a group of our dogs to the mountains the other day,
as is usual. After their run along the creek, she stopped at a little
service station/convenience store for a soda, and the clerk was
admiring the dogs and telling of his wonderful dog who had died from
bad hips. The dog, he explained was sold to him by an unscrupulous
breeder in Golden Valley, some minister who did not know what he was
doing and produced bad dogs. She came home in tears and I grabbed my
check book and headed back to the store. If I had sold him a dog that
did not work out, I did not know it and I was set to make it right, on
the spot, immediately.
I did not recognize him, nor he me, so I introduced myself and asked
about his dog. Was it from our recent Mandy/Sureman litter (Boss
son)? - No, he did not remember the sire and dam but that did not
sound familiar. Was it from our Mandy/Boss litter? No, it was a little
before that.... I asked how far back before that????? Well, the dog
died about a year before at 16 years old and for the last year of his
life he limped and the vet told him it was just one of those Shepherd
things - they all have it!!!!
I explained the expected longevity of the GSD to him, ask him to not
speak ill of me or my dogs if that is what I produced, put my check
book back in my pocket and left.
It is an imperfect world filled with imperfect dogs and imperfect
people. We all hurt when we loose a good one, and it is not uncommon
to blame, question or doubt when that happens. It is not uncommon to
think the breed is going to hell in a hand basket when our experience
is not what we desire it to be. But, reality is not always found in
our emotions of grief.
