In the SV *conformation* ring, it is extremely rare to see anything but
black&red. The German's have bred B&R to B&R so long that the dogs are
starting to lose their saddles. You do see tons of sables in the working lines
and occasional Bi's and blacks, but those lines are quite removed from the
German "show" lines.
Re. the beautiful plush coats on the German dogs... Many carry the coat factor.

Wow! That is so wrong! The Germans breed for type, that is for sure.
However, they are also color blind. Like the Americans, most of the show dogs
(only) you see will be blk/tan or blk/red. However, the Germans don't just do
show dogs. They are multi-purpose dogs and come in all colors. The sables are
loved by Schutzhund folks as they are lighter in color and aren't effected as
much by the heat. Blacks are also popular but more as service dogs. I attend
many venues of dog shows and performance events and see a good representation
of every color.
That said, I will agree that the pigment and coat depth (not length) does seem
to be better in the German lines. However, eye color tends to be lighter than
American lines. This is why I support cross breeding of the lines. Not to
mention, ears seem to be an issue recently with the American lines, not to
mention feet. The German dogs tend to have tight, correct ears and knuckled
feet. I see a lot of weak ears and long toes in today's American line dogs,
including my own, which I don't like. My next breeding will be to a German
dog. JMHO
