Re: the New Puppy Owner Flyer As the purpose of the flyer is to inform, it is important that it not contain misinformation or mislead. The second paragraph states that “German Shepherd Dogs originated in 1899 at Karlsruhe, Germany….” This is a surprise to me as to anyone who looked at one of the items in the secret exhibit that Vivian and I prepared and that was displayed at the Centennial Show. It was a photograph of an article in an 1894 issue of the Scientific American about “German Shepherd Dogs” . Was the magazine prescient? No. What happened in 1899, five years later, was the organization of “des Vereins fur deutsche Schaferhunde. The first lasting and most important German Shepherd Club about a breed that already existed. Since paragraph three mentions breeding or showing the new owner’s dog, there is nothing to suggest to the new owner that his new puppy may have a disqualification that would not allow it to be shown in the conformation ring. This is a new owner who may not know the difference between breed and performance venues. The new owner should be spared the embarrassment and anguish of first learning of his dog’s disqualification when he is in the middle of the breed ring. As to white dogs this is reinforced by the picture of the white dog. Perhaps an asterisk and footnote listing breed ring disqualifications could be added. I am happy about the elimination of the paragraph stating that that one of the best things to do for your dog is to spay or neuter. Here we are fighting mandatory spay and neuter laws and the GSDCA and AKC have been sending out flyer stating that it was a best thing. Instead of being developed in a closet somewhere it might have been helpful to display the proposed flyer in the Review or by email to the membership to seek comments prior to deciding on a final version. Even our beloved board of directors is not omniscient. Tom Brown ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, stayih alive
