There has been a certified parliamentarian present and sitting with the board at the April and July board meetings. Patty Szymczak I have to totally disagree with this statement. Times may have changed, but that does not excuse anyone who is running for President to not know the rules, and not be able to properly run and manage a meeting of the GSDCA. Most of our earlier Presidents had backgrounds of big business Corp to begin with, like Burr Robins,Bob Reuter,Don Hadsall,Harry Schneider,Sam Lawrence,Bob Hamilton,Harold Sands, except Bob Williamson, who was a College Professor( He was our President at two different eras).Bill Collins felt he needed help at that time, so when he was President before me, Bob Williamson attended meetings gratis and sat at his side to assist him. So when I broke the tradition as being the first woman of the combined GSDCA,as well as a non corporate big business person,I knew I had a huge challenge ahead of me, Sure,my many years on the Board served me well, but I memorized Roberts Rules, and when the P&P was developed and finished, studied and learned those. I never conducted a meeting without having both those books in front of me I was fortunate to have Blanche Beisswenger( who was a research librarian) and had served with every President.,at my side. She also remembered the rules and regulations,if I forgot them. I also had a wonderful recording secretary--our own Dorothy Linn, who took the minutes in "her own" shorthand, and translated them on her way home on the plane( we didn't have computers then). But the job of conducting a meeting was on my shoulders alone. We had some problems during those 4 yrs. and we had some "troublemakers"Carmen and Jim Cusick ganged up and stopped my drug testing program. Helen Gleason threw a wrench into me firing Lois Fryslin( Dan Smith did that when he followed me as President) But all in all ,it was a great 4 yrs. I just followed the rules, and the Board member all had their say--I went around the table twice and then called for a vote. I had a productive 4 yrs, with no parliamentarian. We did try it once . Dick Whalen got us one. He was on the Board, and knew someone there in CA, It just didn't work, because our GSDCA BOARD Meetings " are unique",with, like any corporation, has it's own language. I really felt sorry for her,but frankly it was like was has just happened to us--Two outsiders( Hunte and the attorney) dictating to our Board. I think those people running for President,as well as the Board, just have to do their homework and realize it not fun and games, just because it's dog business . When Ginny Altman was Recording Secy, she worked everyday,at that job. She and Dorthy Linn were the best secretaries the GSDCA ever has had. People shouldn't run for the Board just because you want to judge the National. Our Club deserves better than that.
